Are you considering replacing your patio furnishings and unsure of the material you want to use?  Have you been considering using cedar and aren’t sure this is the best material for your purposes?  There are several types of wood outdoor furniture to choose from, and depending on your style of choice, certain types of wood will better meet your needs.  However, cedar is a good all around choice for wood to be used in an outdoor setting.  Consider the reasons.

First of all, cedar is a hard wood that is known for its durability and weather resistance, often used for shingles and roofing purposes among other things.  Therefore, cedar patio furniture has become a popular choice of décor for the outdoors, and it is in high demand.  Aside from being durable and hard, cedar has an aromatic smell that creates a natural ambiance, building a particularly fresh and comforting air for your relaxation on your patio.

Outdoor cedar furniture also helps to fight off nasty, pesky bugs, especially moths that tend to gravitate toward your patio light.  This is because the scented oils the wood produces are natural repellents for such insects.  Therefore, between the pleasant smell and the repellent feature, cedar furniture can provide an excellent experience.

However, there are limits to what cedar outdoor furniture is good for.  The wood does require some maintenance for use, and not everyone wants to take the time to weather guard their furniture.  For example, cedar is best stored for the winter for optimum preservation, though it can easily withstand cold temperatures.  However, intense cold and moisture can cause any wood furniture to age quickly, so storing the furniture during winter is best.  Also, each spring or summer when you bring the furniture back out, you should give it a quick sanding, assuring that the surface is fresh and clean with no splinters or rough spots.

Cedar can be a costly material as well, due to its sturdy properties and long-lasting durability.  If you are looking for simple wood picnic tables that won’t be frequently used or don’t need to be so weather resistant, you may want to choose a less expensive wood, choosing to treat it and not worry about any additional maintenance.  Along the same lines, if you are interested in various types of rustic outdoor furniture, there are definitely types of wood that will give a more rustic appearance and overall “woodsy” feeling to the setup than cedar, which appears light in color most of the time and doesn’t “age” well.

Equipped with the facts about the substance, you can more easily make the determination as to whether cedar is the way to go for you.  Are you a maintenance type of person who prefers to care for a long-lasting piece of furniture, or does it make more sense to you to spend a little less and let it go, simply replacing the piece when it wears out?
